(Latoya Powell at Paramount Kings Dominion)
LaToya Powell
age: 14
From: Landover, MD
LaToya Powell was raised in Landover, MD, where she started with
neighborhood cheers on the basketball court. LaToya says the family member
who supported her most was her mother who was always there for every
cheerleading event. LaToya says what made her want to cheer was that
neighborhood friends were involved in it and they brought her into it. The
people who influenced her to cheer were her friends
and her mother who constantly told her to do something other than sit around
the house and fight with her siblings.
LaToya has performed in competitions at numerous of
places including Dunbar High School, Six Flags America, Howard University,
Paramounts Kings Dominion , Maryland University, and Evans Junior High.
All of these place LaToya's teams either placed
first or second. Before she gooes out to perform she says she likes to
listen to up tempo music to clear her head and also the team says a prayer
before every performance. Other than cheering LaToya says she likes to
sing and act because those are things she would like to do in the futur.
LaToya's goal in
life is to get into the music business and if that doesn't work out she
says she will go to college to become a doctor or a music producer.
LaToya's cheerleading team performs in competition five to six times per
year. Their next
performance will be sometime likely be at Maryland University next
year. Latoya says the reason she wants to do something other
than cheering is because she says it doesn't make enough money for her.
