Ever Heard of Black Wall Street?
Close
your eyes for a moment and imagine a town full of upscale ritzy hotels, the best
banks, top notch casinos, restaurants and bars, and very wealthy town residents.
Now imagine all the businesses and property in this town owned by
African-Americans. May sound like a dream, but its not. In fact from
1905 up
until 1921 this town existed right outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma in an Area known as
the Greenwood District. The area was nicknamed the Black Wall Street
because the quality of services and business was comparable to any that Wall St.
in New York City has ever seen. That was until a white woman, (just like
in Rosewood, FL) claimed she was raped by a black man. The accusation
immediately spread bringing countless whites to the Greenwood to riot, killing
off most of the black population of the once glorious town. Whites began
slaughtering blacks on site and even killed other white pioneers who served as
regular patrons of "The Black Wall Street". The riot eventually
culminated in local white plane owners dropping bombs on the town incinerating
most of the town. The official death toll stood at 36, 26 Blacks and 10 whites,
but there were many reports of unaccounted burials as the victims could not be
recognized. Just as in Rosewood, FL the official death toll was low, but
many of the towns residents and patrons were never heard from again. The moment
the first bomb landed, it eerily etched this town into history as the first time
in U.S. history a town on the U.S. territory was bombed from the air.
